The Pig – Canterbury Nestled in a truly picturesque setting, The Pig immediately makes a wonderful first impression. Surrounded by stunning countryside views and a charming atmosphere, it provides the perfect backdrop for a special lunch. Upon arrival, guests meander down a gravel driveway bordered by beautifully maintained gardens, with teak sun loungers thoughtfully scattered throughout the grounds. Housed within a historic red-brick building with a fascinating rock-and-roll heritage, the property is full of character. Winding paths, colourful planting, and thoughtfully landscaped spaces create a tranquil atmosphere, while the kitchen garden adds a charming touch and reflects the restaurant's commitment to fresh, locally sourced ingredients. One of the highlights of our experience was the exceptionally warm welcome we received upon arrival. The staff were attentive without being intrusive and went out of their way to ensure we were comfortable and well looked after throughout our visit. The interior of the restaurant was warm and inviting, with a lovely, homely charm. The space was full of character, featuring eclectic décor and interesting details that gave us plenty to admire. We were seated in the main dining room with a view of the kitchen, which is always a nice touch and adds a sense of theatre to the dining experience. While the setting and service were undoubtedly the highlights of the afternoon, the food itself was rather mediocre and failed to meet the expectations created by the restaurant's reputation and pricing. We were served complimentary bread while we perused the menu and eventually settled on the Longland Farm duck breast, and Rye Bay dressed crab for our main courses and a side order of seasonal vegetables. The dishes arrived promptly and were elegantly presented. However, the duck breast was not particularly hot and appeared to have been left to rest for longer than necessary. The crab dish which I enjoyed was accompanied by a flowerpot of chips, although these arrived sometime after the main dish and only after I had enquired about them. For the relatively small amount we had ordered for the table of 2, this was an oversight which could have been managed and addressed sooner without the need for me to enquire. We decided to share a dessert, advertised on the menu as "Piggy Fours". From the description, we assumed there would be enough to satisfy both of our sweet cravings. Unfortunately, when it arrived, it consisted of two toasted marshmallow cubes, two dark chocolate pig-shaped caramel-filled chocolates, and two very small triangles of fudge. Given the menu description, we had expected a more substantial offering and found the portion somewhat disappointing. In our opinion, the selection felt more suited to accompanying a coffee or tea rather than serving as a standalone dessert, making the £8.50 price tag difficult to justify. We thoroughly enjoyed our day trip to Canterbury and, most importantly, spending quality time together, which was the true purpose of the outing. However, on this occasion, the food simply did not live up to the hype or expense. The Pig is undoubtedly a beautiful venue with excellent service and a wonderful atmosphere, but the dining experience left us feeling that it was more of a bucket-list destination to try once rather than somewhere we would be eager to revisit. That, ultimately, was a disappointment.
