There’s something refreshingly unapologetic about Terry’s. No pretence, no over-designed interiors, no trying desperately to be the next big thing. Just a brilliant neighbourhood Caff, with a sprinkle of extra, doing what it does very well. A wider variety of guests you will rarely find, ranging from ‘geezers’ having beers to Asian tourists in awe of ‘proper London’, to ordinary people enjoying great food We started with an Aperol Spritz, and a Bloody Mary to settle in, and choose from the menu. We decided on a fairly ordinary full English brunch selection, with some added Scallops. The scallops were superb — beautifully cooked, full of flavour and proof that great food doesn’t need a dozen ingredients and a paragraph of explanation. The accompanying Cafe de Paris butter wasn’t a traditional recipe, but with a pinch of curry flavour that worked perfectly… so much so I ended up dipping my toast in what was left after the scallops were long gone. I judge every breakfast / brunch establishment on their sausage, and Terrys has an epic porky banger. A decent swag that isn’t too meaty and has an old fashioned peppery herby flavour. But what really gives Terry’s its character is Austin, the owner. Warm, engaging and genuinely invested in the place, he gives the restaurant a personality that you simply can’t manufacture. Terry’s feels like a restaurant with a soul — and in a London dining scene increasingly obsessed with being cool, trendy and Instagrammable, that’s becoming a rare thing. His lovely little dog wandering around gave off a lovely homely feel. Good food. Great atmosphere. Proper hospitality. And an Aperol that somehow turns one drink into three.
