Camille is one of the most exciting restaurants in SE1, tucked away on the tourist conveyor belt that is Borough Market. Blink and you’ll walk straight past it. Inside, it’s warm, intimate and effortlessly charming. Candlelit tables, a buzzing room and just enough space between diners to end up chatting to the table next to you. Ours were regulars who couldn’t stop talking about the place. Thankfully, there’s none of that cold, concrete, too-cool-for-you Hackney bistro energy. Camille is somewhere you settle into with a glass of wine and accidentally stay all afternoon. The cooking starts with classic French bistro DNA but isn’t trapped by tradition. Seasonal British produce takes centre stage, with bold, confident cooking that never feels overworked. There’s a fearless use of offal and overlooked cuts, but even the more familiar dishes are executed with serious precision. Nothing is fussy. Everything has a purpose. The calf’s brains were the standout. Delicate, creamy and impossibly rich, with a crisp golden crust and a punchy Café de Paris sauce cutting through the richness. It’s the sort of dish that reminds you why offal deserves far more attention. The whole roasted quail was equally memorable. Crisp skin, juicy pink meat and served with the feet still attached for maximum rustic appeal. The accompanying garlic sauce was outrageously good, although maybe not first-date friendly. This is a dish you attack with your hands, embracing your inner Henry VIII to make sure not a scrap of meat goes to waste. The Dexter tartare Niçoise was another winner. Proper hand cut beef with real texture, lifted by a deeply savoury dressing packed with anchovy and umami. No mushy mince pretending to be tartare here. We rarely order dessert, but a complimentary burnt milk tart arrived for a birthday and completely stole the show. Shatteringly crisp pastry, silky filling with the perfect wobble, and gone within minutes. Not a crumb survived. Service hits exactly the right note. Friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic without ever becoming performative. One server casually mentioned it was only her third day before expertly fielding a barrage of questions. The wine list leans towards independent French producers and low-intervention bottles, with plenty of affordable gems. Every recommendation landed. Camille isn’t cheap, but it feels worth every penny. Go big for a celebration, or just drop in for a couple of plates and a glass of wine without emptying your wallet. This is a restaurant cooking exactly what it believes in. French confidence. British restraint. No gimmicks. Just seriously good food.

About Camille

Camille is a reflection of imagined jaunts through regional France. Head chef Elliot Hashtroudi’s menu captures the rustic energy of a regional French table. A casual bistro-style dining space in the heart of Borough market with a small bar and window counter-dining is the back drop to an a-la-carte menu and ‘daily specials’ board. The outdoor terrace is also open for dining. We change our by the glass list daily ~ much like our specials board, these are wines we’re excited to share with the day's menu in mind. By the bottle we have a broader selection of our favourite winemakers from across France. All of which eschew the use of chemicals in the vineyard and cellar to produce living wines with a real sense of place that reflect not only the growing year but also the grower.
